Fine for Westland Nurseries
11/01/12: HSE has prosecuted a plant nursery after one of their employees sustained a serious personal injury by falling through a glasshouse roof.
The worker who is 21 but has requested anonymity was trying to clean the gutters at Westland Nurseries when he fell through the roof and landed on concrete about 10 feet below.
He sustained major injuries to his head in the accident which included blood on his brain and concussion, he also fractured his wrist and had many other cuts and bruises, the injuries were so serious that he was not able to work for a 12 week period.
The HSE investigation found that Westland Nurseries had very little understanding regarding the risks being faced by their employees who were regularly working at heights and had not taken any appropriate measures to prevent falls.
Westland Nurseries was fined £12K and received a cost order for almost £7K after they pleaded guilty to a breach of the H&S legislation.
