Metropolitan Police ordered to pay compensation

09/01/12: A demonstrator who sustained a broken arm due to police action at a demonstration has been awarded £14,303 in the form of personal injury compensation.

Kelly Minio-Paluello, aged 29, was removed by police from a demonstration outside the Israeli Embassy in Kensington, West London, and her arm was badly broken as she was hauled away.

The pro-Palestinian individual had her arm twisted around her back and then wrenched upwards as a Metropolitan Police Officer attempted to get her up from the ground, the High Court in London heard.

While the Metropolitan police argued that the force was proportionate to the situation, the court ruled against them and decided that the force used was unreasonable and was dangerous enough to cause an avoidable injury.

The protestor still has a small lack of mobility present in her left shoulder which has hampered her sporting ability. This, she claimed, has left her traumatised as a result of the incident. Ms. Minio-Paluello was awarded the compensation via court ruling.
