Aviva warn winter holiday makers

06/01/12: 3 out of 4 skiers go on holiday without having adequate insurance cover.

Injuries sustained by skiing accidents are increasing and can incur expensive medical bills. Despite this, most skiers do not take out the correct insurance. Insurance claims relating to skiing accidents have risen by 40% but 60% of skiers fail to buy adequate insurance for their holiday’s.

Aviva state that the average cost of a medical bill in the last ski season was almost £1500, which is more than the average cost of a skiing holiday. Winter sport cover costs little more than £5 per person in addition to usual travel insurance. A week’s cover to a European resort will cost somewhere between £20 and £35 for each traveller. This is as essential as goggles and boots and could save a great deal of money if there is a problem on the slopes.

25% of holidaymakers don’t purchase adequate insurance as they think that the free European Health Insurance Card, which replaced the E111 in 2005. However, although the EHIC may reduce medical bills by 80% where they are accepted, there is no guarantee that you will be taken to one of these hospitals.

If a particularly serious or complicated accident is sustained and you require transport, the EHIC may not cover it. It also doesn’t cover the cost of an airlift from the slope; it is very easy to incur costs which run into thousands of pounds.

An A viva spokesperson commented that these types of trips require specialist insurance to make sure that you fully enjoy your holiday.
