What is a whiplash compensation calculator?

A whiplash compensation calculator is an online tool that you can use for free to find out how much you could be awarded for a whiplash injury if you decide to make a claim.

The whiplash claim calculator works by asking you for details about:

    • The severity of your injury.
    • Your recovery time.
    • The lost income due to being unable to work.
    • Your medical or rehabilitation expenses.
    • Any other costs incurred due to your injury.

Based on this information, the whiplash calculator will provide you with a general estimate of your potential compensation, considering both your suffering and related financial losses.

However, it is essential to remember that this figure is only a rough approximation. For a more accurate estimate of your compensation prospects, you should get in touch with an experienced solicitor who can evaluate the full impact of your injury and financial losses.

What is whiplash, and what are its symptoms?

Whiplash is a soft tissue injury to the neck that happens when the head is suddenly and rapidly jolted back and forth, like the cracking of a whip. This causes strain to the soft tissues in the neck and spine, damaging the ligaments, muscles and nerves.

In most cases, it is short-lived and treatable, but some people may experience chronic pain, stiffness and dizziness for years. The most common whiplash symptoms include:

      • Neck pain and stiffness.
      • Reduced mobility and range of motion.
      • Headaches, dizziness and tiredness.
      • Tingling or numbness in the arms.

Some people may also experience blurred vision, tinnitus, trouble focusing and sleeping, memory issues and depression.

Common accidents that cause whiplash injuries

Whiplash can be caused by various accidents that involve a whipping motion of the head and neck, including:

      • Road traffic accidents, especially rear-end collisions.
      • Slips, trips and falls that cause the head to jolt violently.
      • Workplace accidents involving machinery, falls or falling objects.
      • Accidents involving amusement rides in fairgrounds and theme parks.
      • Trauma from physical altercations, such as being punched or shaken violently.
      • Sports incidents, such as falls or collisions in contact sports.

If your accident was due to someone else’s negligence, you may be eligible to make a whiplash injury compensation claim.

What does compensation for a whiplash injury cover?

A whiplash injury claim covers two types of damages incurred as a result of your accident:

General damages cover the subjective impact of the whiplash and can include:

      • Physical pain and suffering.
      • Psychological and emotional distress.
      • Long-term disability.
      • Impact on hobbies and daily activities.
      • Reduced enjoyment and quality of life.

Special damages cover the financial impact of the injury, and could include:

      • Private consultations and treatment.
      • Physical therapy and rehabilitation.
      • Travel expenses to medical appointments.
      • Loss of earnings due to being unable to work.
      • Costs of care and assistance, if needed.
      • Any other out-of-pocket expenses related to your neck injury.

How is a whiplash compensation claim calculated?

The compensation amount for general damages caused by a whiplash injury is calculated by looking at:

      • The severity of the injury.
      • How long recovery takes.
      • The long-term impact of the injury.
      • Whether you also suffered a psychological injury.

For whiplash injuries caused by road accidents lasting up to two years, the damages for pain, suffering and loss of amenity are based on the Whiplash Injury Regulations 2021. These set fixed tariffs for whiplash based on the duration of the injury.

For severe whiplash lasting over two years and whiplash claims valued at over £5,000, the amount of compensation is calculated based on the Judicial College Guidelines (JCG).

The whiplash payment for special damages is calculated based on financial documents, such as receipts, invoices, payslips and medical bills. These will usually be added up to calculate your pecuniary losses and expenses.

If you were partially to blame for your injury, your compensation may be reduced to reflect your contributory negligence. For example, if your claim is valued at £8,000 but you are 25% at fault, your compensation would be reduced to £6,000.

How much compensation could you claim for whiplash?

Following the Whiplash Reform Programme, the compensation awards for low-value whiplash claims related to road traffic accidents suffered between 31 May 2021 and 30 May 2025 are:

Duration of Injury Whiplash Whiplash and Psychological Injury
      Under 3 months £240 £260
      Between 3 months and 6 months £495 £520
      Between 6 months and 9 months £840 £895
      Between 9 months and 12 months £1,320 £1,390
      Between 12 months and 15 months £2,040 £2,125
      Between 15 months and 18 months £3,005 £3,100
      Between 18 months and 24 months £4,215 £4,345

For whiplash injuries suffered in road accidents from 31 May 2025 onwards, you could receive:

Duration of Injury Whiplash Whiplash and Psychological Injury
      Under 3 months £275 £300
      Between 3 months and 6 months £565 £595
      Between 6 months and 9 months £965 £1,025
      Between 9 months and 12 months £1,510 £1,595
      Between 12 months and 15 months £2,335 £2,435
      Between 15 months and 18 months £3,445 £3,550
      Between 18 months and 24 months £4,830 £4,975

If your injury was more severe or was not caused by an RTA, your whiplash payout will be based on the Judicial College guidelines. For example, you could receive:

      • £9,630 to £16,770 for injuries with a recovery time of around five years and future vulnerability.
      • £16,770 to £30,500 for an injury that results in cervical spondylosis, ongoing pain and movement limitation.
      • £30,500 to £68,330 for severe soft tissue injuries that cause significant, permanent disability.

Feel free to use our whiplash settlement calculator to find out how much you could receive for the pain, suffering and financial losses caused by your injury.

Does the accident type affect the whiplash compensation?

Yes, the type of accident claim made can influence the value of your claim in various ways:

      • If you were injured in a road traffic accident, the compensation for whiplash lasting up to two years is subject to the fixed tariffs mentioned above.
      • If you were injured in another type of accident or your symptoms last for more than two years, your compensation will be calculated according to the JCG.
      • If your injury was due to a criminal assault, you may need to claim compensation through the CICA, which has its own tariff system.
      • If you suffered whiplash abroad, the compensation settlement may vary from country to country.
      • If you were partially at fault for the accident, your compensation will be reduced to reflect your part of the blame.

How accurate is the whiplash compensation claim calculator?

Our whiplash compensation calculator can provide you with a valuable and realistic starting point by estimating the potential value of your personal injury claim.

It considers both the nature and severity of your injury and the related financial losses and is based on official tariff figures from the Whiplash Injury Regulations 2021 (for applicable road traffic accident cases) and the Judicial College Guidelines (JCG, 16th edition, 2022) for other injuries.

However, every case is unique, and the calculator may not account for all your losses and expenses. Compensation also depends on the strength of your case, whether contributory negligence applies and the negotiation process.

Also, the injury compensation calculator does not account for the fees your solicitor will deduct from your settlement if you win. For a more accurate estimate of your potential compensation, we recommend you seek free advice from our team of specialist injury lawyers.
